Many of us read the accounts in sacred texts, scripture and mythology of individuals communicating directly with God or some deity as fiction, stories made up to inspire or guide ..or perhaps delude us. Yet the wisdom expressed in such messages can be so profound, so clear and resonant with our inner being that we cannot doubt their truth.
So where does such wisdom come from? From divine sources outside of us? Possibly, though that is not what the ancients tell us, nor the great Masters. They tell us that God...the Divine...is within, and that if we want to know truth or communicate with the Greater or Universal Mind, we must learn to listen to the voice within.
If you are uncomfortable with the concepts of divinity, God or Greater mind, then think of these communications as coming from the unconscious mind, not from the dungeon where we hide our unwanted memories and impulses, but from a deeper level from which can arise flashes of extraordinary insight and inspiration, and a sense of Oneness: Jung's collective unconscious or Edgar Cayce's superconscious
Since reading Jung's 'Dreams, Memories and Reflections' last year (for the third time), I have been determined to explore my unconscious mind in order to find what is hidden there, and what wisdom its deeper levels may have for me.
This is not, I believe, self-indulgence but, as Jung insisted, the necessary work of every individual on the path of self-actualisation. It is, I believe, the most important task of humanity, without which humanity cannot and will not evolve beyond its present state of ignorance and savagery.
That within you that is not brought to the light will destroy you.
One method that I have used for getting in touch with the deeper unconscious, what Cayce calls the 'superconscious', is Inspirational Writing. Unlike automatic writing, where the writer is unaware of what is being written and the hand is more or less guided by another consciousness, Inspirational Writing is a process where the writer recieves the message from the unconscious, and is aware of what he or she is writing, but is not consciously involved. This requires that the writer enter a light or deep trance state by quieting the conscious mind so the unconscious mind can, more or less, take over. It's like being hypnotised, and in fact, I use self-hypnosis and meditation to prepare for the actual writing.
Normally, I would only share what my unconscious tells me with close friends or fellow spiritual aspirants, for the messages are always very personal, sometimes quite strong, and often unflattering.
One time, I was told that my real intention for providing a certain service was not to be of service but to feel superior. That hurt. Another time, I was told, 'The way you treated your body was just one indication of a general inattentiveness. You allowed most of your life to pass by unattended, despite all the clues and signs sent your way. You have been very blind. You mistook learning for doing.' Ouch!
On the other hand, I have recieved guidance for dealing with specific issues, such as a persistent knee problem, a relationship problem or some other challenge. In these cases, the guidance received has been clear and practical, and appropriate to my situation, and I have learned to trust it and put it into practice. Somehow, acting on this advice seems to stimulate the flow of further guidance and inspiration as it is needed, even without any preparation on my part.
This message, though, the message I received yesterday is so important, and, I think, so relevant to others that I am sharing it here. I give it word for word as it came. If you feel it speaks to you, as it does to me, then I encourage you to act on it and see for yourself whether or not it helps you on your spiritual journey.
The question I put to my unconscious: What major impediment or obstacle limits my spiritual growth and awakening at this time, and what can I do to overcome it in the next week?
The Message
The answer is not in what you do, it is in what you believe about yourself. You have no faith in yourself and look outward for confirmation, and finding little of it because you are looking in the wrong places, you believe that your worth is little, that you are insignificant and unworthy.
Unworthy of what, my dear? Of your true self. You feel unworthy of your radiance, of your beautiful heart, and your wisdom, so you project those things outward onto others, some of whom are not yet ready to hold such intense light, such power, and who therefore seem to fail you. So you seek what you are in others, and are disappointed, and in pain you close of further from those parts of yourself that you are afraid to express.
Go forward, my love. Go into the world with your shield down, your arms lowered, and your eyes fully open, and see the light of your own being reflected in the world. Recognise yourself in the things you love - in your grandchildren's laughter, sunlight on leaves, the brilliance of the glinting sun on the sea....
THIS IS YOU. It is not other. It is you reflected in your experience. Know from where it comes, this beauty, this perfection. It is you, if you will but see it.
Whenever you see or hear something that moves you, read something that inspires you, are touched deep in your heart, be still and feel it within you for it it were not there, you could not recognise it.
Stop and breathe in the beauty, the radiance, the power.
Breathe in - 'This too is me'; breathe out - 'I let go of resistance.'
Breathe in - 'I am All of this, and more'; breathe out - 'I am a channel of divine radiance'.
So be it.'
