In 1999, I read a news report about an event planned in Egypt for the Dec 1999 millenium celebrations. A capstone was going to be lowered by helicopter on the apex of the Great Pyramid of Gizeh. I remember at the time thinking it was a big publicity stunt. Anyway, it was cancelled.
Much later, I learned that for many people around the world, the placing of the capstone was enormously significant, connected with the many myths and legends concerning the great pyramid and its builders, the almost perfect astrological alignment of the three pyramids, and the association of the Gizeh complex with the Egyptian god Thoth and the enigmatic magus, Hermes Trimegistus.
Many believed that the placing of the capstone at the end of the millenium and the planned exploration by robot of a previously unknown passage beneath the pyramid heralded the long-awaited discovery of ancient records thought to be hidden somewhere in the Gizeh complex, maybe inside the great pyramid itself.
One of these was the book or books of Thoth or Djehuti, called the heart 
(which the ancients equated with mind) and tongue of Ra, and according to some Egyptian texts, the architect of the Great Pyramid of Gizeh.

Records of Atlantis were also believed to be hidden there. According to readings held by the famous psychic Edgar Cayce, the Great Pyramid of Gizeh was built at around 10,000 years ago, after the resettlement of many Atlanteans in Egypt due to the imminent destruction of Atlantis.
(It is generally agreed that the Great pyramid was built around 2500 BC, though new evidence suggests it occurred thousands of years earlier).
So you can see that many people hoped that at the proposed Gizeh millennial event, everything would come together: Cayce's Atlantis predictions, the mysteries of Thoth, and the beginning of a new era for humanity.
But they were overlooking one critical factor: the spiritual requirements for such revelations to occur, as given in the myths and prophecies themselves.
In the 1940's, Edgar Cayce predicted that Atlantian records hidden in Egypt would one day be uncovered. These records describing their history, scientific and technical knowledge, their spiritual knowledge and participation in the physical evolution of mankind, were hidden in various places, including a "house or tomb of records" in the pyramid of Giza complex in Egypt. However, he also said that the records would not be found until we are worthy to receive their knowledge.
Much earlier, centuries before in fact, other prophecies were found in a manuscript of Egyptian, perhaps Egyptian-Greek origins, that appeared in Europe in the 1400's. It referred to a mythological (perhaps real) Egyptian book or books of Thoth hidden in the Great Pyramid.
Thoth is the Egyptian god of wisdom who brought civilization and writing to Egypt. He also and most importantly represents Truth. His writings were therefore held by the Egyptians to be both sacred and to be filled with truth, the great truths of mankind, the cosmos, the Divine and their real relationship to each other.
So powerful is that knowledge that in one of the texts, Thoth says as he deposits the books in their secret chamber:
".......be ye unseen and undiscovered by all men who shall go to and fro on the plains if this land until the time when the heavens, having grown old, shall beget men worthy of you".
According to the Cayce readings on Atlantis, their knowledge could be used for great evil or for mankind's spiritual evolution, and was therefore potentially dangerous. It was, the readings tell, the misuse of that knowledge for selfish and self-serving purposes that led to their final destruction.
This message that great knowledge must be protected from the unprepared and unworthy and revealed only to the initiated, or only when mankind has made itself worthy to receive it is found in almost all sacred and spiritual traditions.
In the Essene Gospel of Peace, it is written that only those who had prepared over seven years were finally “ripe for truth” and worthy to:
“enter the Brotherhood of the Elect and learn the hidden teachings of the Elders.”
In the Bible, Jesus says:
"The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables so that they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding." (Mark (4:11-12)
St Clement of Alexandria wrote in the 2nd century AD that that when Mark went to Alexandria, he prepared a second version of the gospel intended only for the initiated (perhaps into the Egyptian mysteries):
“He thus composed a more spiritual Gospel for the use of those who were being perfected.”

Even within the sacred texts that are available to us now the great truths are often hidden. Muslims believe that the Koran contains all the wisdom mankind and the soul will ever need. For Jews, it's the Torah and the Zohar, for many Christians, the Bible...if we can find the truth there. The Truth is also within found us and in nature. Look within, said Jesus. Look in nature, says the Essene Gospel of Peace. Yet even there, the Truth is still hidden. Only those with eyes to see will see.
Clearly, somewhere within human consciousness is the knowing that we are part of something grand, heirs to great wisdom, and we yearn to know it.
And we will. The promise is in the myths, the scriptures and the teachings: we will gain the wisdom, the truth that we so desire....when we are prepared. TRUTH is our birthright, our soul's goal and eventually, it will grace us.
Many have sought the Atlantean records and the Book of Thoth in the necropolis of the Giza pyramids in Egypt and elsewhere. So far, they have not been found. Could be that they don't exist. Could be that these mythic texts are symbolic representations of the inner knowing that we seek...truly mythological.
Or maybe we are being warned that if gained before we are prepared to understand it and use it for good, as was intended, great knowledge can cause great harm.
This was demonstrated at the time of the European Renaissance. A manuscript known the Corpus Hermeticum emerged, and within it were profound spiritual and occult teachings purportedly written by the mythical, perhaps Hermes, called Hermes Trimegistus, Hermes the Thrice Great, who as we have seen is generally associated with the Egyptian god Thoth. These texts were translated into Latin by Marcilio Ficino (one of my favourite philosophers), and widely read.

Well, the Corpus Hermeticum contained such wisdom, such deep knowledge that was also compatible with esoteric Christianity that many Renaissance philosophers, theologians, priests and a Pope advocated that it be incorporated into the Christian canon. Had this occurred, Christianity may have been enormously enriched and much closer to the path that Jesus had intended.
But Christian Europe was not ready for this knowledge (including that the earth is a globe that rotates around the sun), and one its most influential adherents, Giordano Bruno, was condemned for heresy and burned at the stake.

After that, Hermiticism went underground, but did not disappear for a hundred years later the fearful King James 1 initiated a propaganda campaign against the Hermetic teachings that led to a shameful period of witch-hunts, persecution and burnings. Yet Hermeticism survived and does to this day in various forms.
Which leads me back to the cancelled Millennial event and the failed attempts to find the perhaps mythical perhaps real hidden knowledge of Gizeh.
Perhaps we are not yet ready for that knowledge. Perhaps we are not yet worthy to emulate sacred rites like the capping of the pyramid of Gizeh, where it has been said that Jesus studied and became the Great Initiate.
Perhaps the knowledge we seek there is so sacred that it must be sought, approached and received in sanctity, with pure and truth-filled hearts.
Until we have committed to our spiritual evolution, the true knowledge may remain hidden, even when it lies in the open before us. So be it, I say.
And even when we have cleared the way...made ourselves worthy to receive Truth, we may yet have to learn its language, for as the sage Lao Tsu said:
"Truth is always paradoxical".
